Judging by the tone of recent debates, many people are, and not only because of the technology itself. Much of the anxiety reflects a romantic image of how music is supposed to be made: the lone genius at an instrument, capturing inspiration in a single take. In reality, 2025 was significant not because AI suddenly learned how to make music, but because AI-generated music became visible, contested, and economically relevant. Seen in historical perspective, however, this moment looks less like a rupture than the latest chapter in a long story about music and machines.
Music production has always absorbed technologies. The introduction of drum machines in the late 1970s and early 1980s provides a clear precedent. Devices such as the Roland TR-808 were initially conceived as substitutes for human drummers. In 2025, major record labels pursued high-profile legal action against AI music platforms over the use of copyrighted catalogs for training, while also entering settlement and licensing discussions that point toward commercial accommodation rather than outright prohibition. At the same time, streaming platforms began introducing measures to identify or label AI-generated tracks, responding to concerns about attribution, fraud, and royalty distribution. Meanwhile, copyright offices and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic launched formal consultations on how generative AI fits within existing legal frameworks. Copyright law itself reflects a long-standing balance. It protects specific expressions — melodies, lyrics, recordings — but not general ideas, styles, or techniques. Writing “in the style of” another artist has always been allowed, even if copying a recognizable passage is not. AI challenges this balance less by rejecting it than by pushing it to scale.
What is genuinely new about AI is not that machines are involved in music-making, but that musical generation itself can be industrialized. AI can produce large volumes of usable music at minimal marginal cost, particularly affecting stock music, background scoring, and other routine forms of production. As with earlier technologies, disruption appears first at the lower and middle tiers of creative markets, long before it reaches highly differentiated artistic practice.
